Easter: US warns citizens of possible attacks in Nigeria

Ahead this year's Easter celeberation, the United States Department of State has warned American citizens living in Nigeria over possible terrorist attacks in the country.

Issuing this warning through the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, the Department of State said that given the history of attacks throughout Nigeria during previous holiday weekends, as well as the recent attack in Kano on March 18 and the failed attempt in Kano on March 23, all U.S. citizens living and traveling in Nigeria to take extra precautions for your personal security and safety.

"Due to the continued threat of kidnapping of expatriates country-wide, including recent kidnappings on Victoria Island in Lagos, the U.S. Mission recommends that U.S. citizens and organizations maintain accountability for the whereabouts of their staff, test communication systems to ensure that they are working properly, and ensure secure means of transport for any necessary travel.

"Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities" the warning reads in part.

Pope washes prisoners’ feet in unprecedented Easter rite

Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 young offenders including two girls and two Muslims at a Rome prison on Thursday in an unprecedented version of an ancient Easter ritual, seen as part of efforts to bring the Catholic Church closer to those in need.

The pope knelt down, washing and kissing the young prisoners’ feet in the first Holy Thursday ceremony of its kind performed by a pontiff in prison, and the first to include women and Muslims.
“Whoever is the most high up must be at the service of others,” Francis said at the mass in the Casal del Marmo youth prison, a fortnight after being elected Latin America’s first pope.

“I do this with all my heart because it is my duty as a priest, as a bishop. I have to be at your service. I love doing it because this is what the Lord has taught me,” the 76-year-old said.

Woman hides drugs in private part

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Wednesday arrested a 33 years old Senegalese woman with 680 grammes of heroin and cocaine tactically hidden in her private parts at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos while attempting to board an Arik Air flight to Dakar.

The suspect, Miss Kamara Oumou claimed that she smuggled the drugs for the love she had for her Nigerian boyfriend.

Speaking on the arrest, NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar said that the suspect used industrial tape in sticking three parcels of cocaine weighing 515 grammes on her waist while 6 wraps of heroin weighing 165 grammes were inserted in her private parts.

Henry Okah bags 24-Years for Independence day bombing

Nigerian Henry Okah has being jailed for 24 years by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg earlier today (Tuesday). "Effectively, the accused [Okah] is therefore sentenced to 24 years imprisonment," Judge Neels Claassen said as he handed down sentence.

On 21 January, Okah was found guilty on 13 counts of terrorism, including engaging in terrorist activities, conspiracy to engage in terrorist activities, and delivering, placing, and detonating an explosive device.

More Nigerians set to leave Switzerland

Nigeria has recorded a high number of voluntary repartees from Switzerland following the migration partnership agreement between both countries.

NAN reports that under the partnership signed in 2011, voluntary repartees are given return assistance to the tune of 7,000 Swiss Franc, an equivalent of 8,000 U.S. dollars. The envoy said that the money, which is given upon arrival by the Swiss Embassy, was meant for “rehabilitation, or soft landing purpose,” in order to aid their integration into the society.

She also said that such categories of returnees were transported home in regular flights and with due courtesy.
Njeze said more than 70 percent of illegal immigrants have accepted “on their own” to return to Nigeria in line with incentives provided within the framework of the migration partnership.

Japanese scientists create artificial sperms from stem cells

For the first time in human history,they have successfully utilized sperm cells created with stem-cell techniques to fertilize eggs and produce live, normal offspring.

They used embryonic stem cells of mice to make primordial germ cells,which are the precursors for sperm cells.

The breakthrough research by the Asian scientists, led by Professor Mitinori Saitou from the Kyoto University, is published as an abstract in the journal Cell,, entitled: “Reconstitution of the Mouse Germ Cell Specification Pathway in Culture by Pluripotent Stem Cells”. Wonderful!

Akwa Ibom Governor, Akpabio, admits rigging senatorial primary election on Live TV

Wonders! Well not wonders actually because he's not the first. In a barefaced confession to electoral fraud, Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State, who is at the centre of multiple "gift" scandals involving state funds, admitted on live television, to falsifying a senatorial election result and personally replacing the winner with his preferred candidate. 

For him to actually say it openly and damn the consequences is quite alarming.

Noble laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has lashed at members of Boko Haram, saying they have limited knowledge of Islamic religion.

Speaking Monady in Port Harcourt at the opening of this year’s Rivers state education summit, organised by the state government Professor Soyinka said poor knowledge of the Koran was largely responsible for why Boko Haram should despise western education. *coughs*

In his words, “Boko Haram are not educated enough about their religion to know that some of the greatest philosophers came from the religion. They have been taught one track line (Monorail) about the religion. They need to be re educated about the religion”, he said. #True

Meanwhile, three schools were burnt down in Biu, a Borno State town, yesterday, as soldiers and gunmen believed to be members of the Boko Haram were locked in a gun battle. They are Godiya Primary school, Lajada Private school and Standard Private school. And I actually served in Maiduguri, Biu to be precise, when will Boko stop?

Bishop David Oyedepo launches Airline ''Dominion Air'

One of Nigeria’s richest pastor and self-styled bishop, David Oyedepo, has made a glistening addition to his business empire by floating an airline called Dominion Air.

Sources within the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the agency charged with business registration in Nigeria, confirmed the registration of Dominion Air with David Oyedepo as its chairman. Another source within a Lagos-based insurance firm known to handle most of Oyedepo’s businesses said the airline project had been in the works for six years and was only made a reality this year.

127 prisoners escape in Adamawa jail attack

One hundred twenty-seven prison inmates escaped when gunmen attacked their jailhouse in Nigeria's eastern Adamawa state, a prison chief said on Sunday. "A total of 127 inmates escaped following the attack. So far, we have not recaptured any of them," said Adamawa state prison chief Andrew Barka. 

Only one prisoner, who was shot and injured in the leg, was left behind in the prison in the town of Ganye after the Friday attack, he said. "We lost a deputy comptroller in charge of the Ganye prison in the attack. He was shot dead by the gunmen," Barka told AFP. 

He said that the prison gate was torn down and the cells were forced open by the gunmen, allowing the prisoners to escape. 

The gunmen killed 25 people in series of attacks on different locations on Friday in Ganye, including the prison, a police station, a bank and two taverns, state police spokesman Mohammed Ibrahim said.  Adamawa is not safe oh! Lord have mercy...

‘Why should Senator, Rep earn N15m, N12m monthly?

National coordinator of the Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, FJHD, Oghenjabor Ikimi, weekend, lamented that the cost of governance in Nigeria was too high, saying,  he could not comprehend why a Senator earns as much as N15 million and member of the House of Representatives – about N12 monthly.

"I am yet to come to terms with the prohibitive cost of running both the Federal Government and the National Assembly and if I may ask, why is a Nigerian Senator earning as much as N15million per month
 
"Or better still, why should a member of the Nigerian lower house earn as much as N12million per month in terms of salaries and allowances, outside their constituency allowances", he asserted. Wow! speechless, that's an awful lot.

Dangote's cement truck kills couple and five others

A couple and five others have been crushed to death by a cement-laden truck, belonging to Dangote Industries Limited. The accident occurred on Thursday in Ibese area of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the development on Friday. The Itori Unit Commander of the FRSC, Fatai Bakare, said “The accident occurred when an articulated vehicle lost control and rammed into two commercial motorcycles, killing a couple and four others on the spot,” he said.

According to Bakare, the vehicle and two others owned by the company were set ablaze by a mob.“The seventh person was one of the drivers of the three trailers. He was inside the truck when it was set ablaze by the angry mob in the area.

“Seven people died in the accident, including a man and his wife, who were on a bike, and another man, whom we heard that his wife just put to bed and the naming ceremony is next week Monday. “The accident involved six males and one female. Their bodies have been deposited at the Ilaro General Hospital morgue.

“As expected, people reacted angrily and burnt down two trucks of the cement company. The accident was a result of recklessness on the part of the driver, which led to the loss of control.

What is with with everyone parting ways with their record labels? Initially it was WizKid of EME Records, few days ago Jesse Jags of Chocolate City and now Davido's HKN Gang. According to Nigerian Entertainment Today there is major crisis in the HKN Gang as they might lose two of it’s popular acts B Red and Sinarambo.

According to them, there are very strong indications that popstar Davido ‘Davido‘ Adeleke is parting ways with his pop singing cousins (his father’s elder brother’s sons) and label mates, Bayo ‘B Red‘ Adeleke and Sina ‘Sinarambo‘ Adeleke.

NET sources say tension has been building among the cousins for a while ‘but B Red and Sina have been playing it cool’. Apparently, the lesser known cousins now want out.

Taraba Governor Danbaba Suntai moved to U.S. Hospital

Taraba State Governor, Danbaba Suntai, who was receiving treatment in Germany after he got  involved in a plane crash in October 25 last year, has now been moved to the John Hopkins University in the United States.

Mr. Suntai was flown to Germany in an air ambulance on October 25 after the crash which occurred  in Adamawa leaving him and five other passengers on the private jet injured. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Taraba Specialist Hospital, Prof. Zakari Aliyu, disclosed this in Jalingo on Friday. This was done to avail him better treatment options.

Nigerian professor develops drug for cancer, diabetes from bitter-leaf

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, Professor Ernest Izevbigie, has announced a major breakthrough in the management of cancer, diabetes and prostate enlargement, with the announcement of a new drug for the treatment of the ailments.

He made the announcement at a press briefing organised by the University to announce the successful development of the medicines named Edotide. Izevbigie said the medicines, which are nature-based, have little or no toxicity, as is usually found in such drugs.

Prof. Izevbigie stated that the medicines which were made from the bitter-leaf (vernonia amygdalina), have been certified by the National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and have been internationally accepted, as the National Academy of Inventors (NIA), based in United States of America, has endorsed it. Good stuff!

$620m bribery: Reps sack Lawan at last

The House of Representatives finally relieved Mr. Farouk Lawan of his position as the Chairman of the Committee on Education on Thursday.

The House had placed Lawan on suspension since June last year, following his involvement in the controversial $620million bribery saga. In his place, the speaker named Lawan’s kinsman from Kano State, Mr. Aminu Suleiman.

Cross River State Gov, splashes N25m, land on Eagles

Members of the Super Eagles, who won the South Africa 2013 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, have been rewarded by the governor of Cross River State, Sen. Liyel Imoke. He gave out cash reward of N25 million and land in ‘prime location’ to every member of the team.

The Governor also gave the sum of N5 million to the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF. Not left out from the largesse is an indigene of the state, Peter Edibe, the only Nigerian match official at the AFCON 2013.

NSCDC arrests 62 fake NYSC Corpers in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested 62 suspected fake corps members, including a nursing mother, at an illegal orientation camp.

The Commandant, Mr Andekin Musa, told newsmen in Lafia on Monday. He said among those arrested were 44 females and 18 males.

According to him, one Mr Chinedu, believed to be the coordinator and director of the camp, is still at-large. He said investigation revealed that the suspected fake corps members paid money ranging between N120, 000 and N200,000 before being admitted into the camp.

He said the suspects, most of whom claimed to have graduated from the University of Jos Consultancy programmes, had confessed to the crime.

We will declare another civil war if the senseless killings of the Igbos in the North continues - MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has warned the nation about the possibility of another civil war over the incessant killings of Ndigbo in the Northern part of the country.

MASSOB leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike who issued the warning while reacting to Monday bomb blast at a motor park in Kano stated that Ndigbo would be forced to defend themselves from the recent killings in various parts of the North.

Uwazurike noted that the Igbo had been pushed to the wall by the Boko Haram insurgency, adding that the people would be left with no other option than rise to the occasion to defend themselves.

Governor of Akwa Ibom doles out N1 Million for Mr Biggs lunch

The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio on Sunday gave N1 Million each to the six Chairmen of the Peoples's Democratic Party (PDP) from the South-South geopolitical zone who had converged in Port Harcourt for a party reconciliation session. The N1 Million was meant for Mr Biggs to fill up their empty stomachs. And to think some people in Nigeria are finding it difficult to feed. Na wa oh!

Now I don't know how true this is but if it is, then it's really creepy. Meet the 29 year old lady who has admitted she is addicted to drinking blood. Michelle, 29, has been downing pig’s blood since she was a teenager, and now says she cannot be in a good mood without it.

‘Blood is as important as water to me,’ she says during her appearance on the show. ‘I like to drink blood when I’m reading, when I’m relaxing, when I’m watching TV, when I’m painting,’ she explains. ‘There’s never a bad time for me to drink blood.’

Bill Gates cancels planned trip to Nigeria because of Alamieyeseigha

America’s richest man, Bill Gates, has cancelled his scheduled March 27 official visit to Nigeria, in response to the controversial pardon granted by President Goodluck Jonathan to ex-convicts Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Shettima Bulama, according to PREMIUM TIMES .

That trip, authoritative diplomatic sources said, has now been cancelled, two days after the U.S. government expressed disappointment with its Nigerian counterpart for pardoning convicted money launderers and warned it might cut aid meant for the country.

“I can confirm to you that Mr. Gates won’t be coming as scheduled,” sources reportedly claimed Monday morning. “The body language of Washington D.C. does not support his travelling to Nigeria. The thinking here is that the Nigerian government has high tolerance level for corruption and should be ostracised in all ways possible.”

Our sources said Mr. Gates has already instructed his staff to inform the Nigerian presidency, the secretariat of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Federal Ministry of Health that he was no longer coming. 

Alamieyeseigha: US considers visa restrictions on govt officials

There was indication on Sunday that United States might slam visa restrictions on some Nigerian government officials in protest against the state pardon granted a former Bayelsa State Governor Dieprieye Alameiyeiseigha, and an ex-Managing Director of the defunct Bank of the North, Mr. Shettima Bulama.

A diplomatic source, who made this known to The PUNCH in Abuja, said the US was miffed by the Federal Government’s decision to summon its Deputy Head of Mission for flaying the reprieve granted the two men.

He said, “There are a lot of options open to Washington. For one, if this matter is not resolved, they can issue visa restrictions on government officials and then follow it up with other sanctions recognised within international law.”

FG withdraws Dana Air licence

On Saturday night Government revoked the Air Operators Certificate of Dana Air which technically means Dana cannot continue flight operations.  You remember the House of Representatives and Senate had earlier in the year passed a resolution asking the Federal Government to revoke the operating licence of Dana Air and to remove the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority based on the report of the committee on the investigation carried out on the 2012 Dana crash.

A top official in the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) also confirmed the withdrawal of Dana’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

NSCDC Official speaks on "Oga at the Top" saga

The NSCDC official condemned what he described as unholy celebration of a minor error and advised Nigerians to stop falling prey of the antics of mischievous persons who have chosen to sponsor the “dirty harassment in the social media, in a bid to halt the commandant’s openness in handling oil thieves.” 

They claimed that “the speculation of the error in the social media was the handiwork of vandals and their godfathers”. 

"Do not be surprised that even the so-called chief executives of some agencies until now, did not know their websites. I am not saying that this is an excuse but I am saying that his personality should not have been dragged into the mud".

Ekiti State University expels five students for alleged rape

The Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, has expelled five students for alleged rape. The students, who were arrested on Thursday through the joint effort of the institution’s security men, the police and youths in Iworoko-Ekiti, have been charged to court.

They are Babalola Adedotun Kolawole, a 300-Level Psychology student with matriculation number 092819; Omoteye Olalekan Olamide (300-Level Psychology with number 0902886); Bamigboye Biola Moshood, a pre-degree Social Science student and Adekunle Lateef Omogbemileke, (300-Level Accounting with number 0902865).

Adekunle Lateef Omogbemileke and Okube Gabriel Ogunmoroti are at large. Sources said they were expelled based on the report of the Institution’s Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Prof. W. O. Adebayo. SAY NO TO RAPE!!!
