Nigerians will henceforth pay for only the power they consume as the new electricity tariff released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has removed fixed electricity charges that has constantly caused discrepancies in the billing system of meters in most Nigerian homes. 

Six Nigerian Banks Reportedly Set to Merge in January 2016

According to a report by Citizen, Six commercial banks are likely to seek mergers and acquisitions in the New Year.

The publication reports that the development arises, “no thanks to the shock created in their assets and balance sheet sizes in the face of declining oil prices. Crude oil prices have fallen to as low as $37.11 per barrel from over $110 per barrel a year ago. This has adversely affected banks’ oil assets. Besides, the level of non-performing loans in the sector has risen.”

According to the report,  Managing Director, Sterling Bank Plc, Yemi Adeola, who disclosed the news yesterday, reportedly stating that he envisaged possible shrinking in the number of local banks in the New Year. 

Kate Henshaw Appointed Special Adviser By Cross River State Governor

Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw has been appointed by the Cross River State Governor, Benedict Ayade as the Special Adviser, Liaison, Lagos.

Kate Henshaw showed her passion for politics a while ago by contesting for Cross River state House of Assembly.

According to reports, he also approved the appointment of Senator Florence Ita Giwa as the Chairman of the Cross River Ports Authority.

Popular Aba based comedian and actor, Dede One Day has died. The actor slumped while anchoring an event in Obehi in Abia state. He was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead. He was in his 40s. May his soul rest in peace, Amen!

Unemployment Rate Will Be Lower After The 2016 Budget Is Passed - Buhari

President Mohammadu Buhari at a dinner he organised in honour of the visiting Alumni Association of the Indian Defence Services Staff College,DSSC, Wellingon, led by the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ghanashyam, yesterday, said that the problem of youth unemployment in the country will reduce after the 2016 national budget is passed.

Lamenting that 60 per cent of the country’s youth population was unemployed, the President said: 

“We will sit down to see how we can rehabilitate industries. We will do this in order to clear the problem of unemployment. This is extremely dangerous for our country. We are meeting after the budget to see how to revive industry and secure the economy.”

The President also said that the insecurity in the North-East, abduction for ransom in the South and the sabotage of the oil industry in the Delta region are all connected to poverty and unemployment.

“We are meeting after the budget to see how to revive industry and secure the economy,” he further assured.

29-year-old businessman, Oluchi Ajimowu, who was allegedly involved in the death of his wife, Priscilla Ajimowu, a 23-year-old mother of two, has been apprehended by the State Department for Criminal Investigation, SCID, Yaba, Lagos State. 

Nigerian Drug Dealer Jailed In London For Possession Of Cocaine And Heroin

A Nigerian drug dealer has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison after police found 79 wraps of class A drugs hidden under a bath in Chelmsford, Essex.

Lekan Awosika, 25, of Central Park Road, East Ham, was sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court on November 27, 2015 after he was found guilty of possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and heroin.

Awosika was arrested on March 25 this year by officers from Operation Saturn, a team formed in 2014 to tackle gang related violence and drug crime.

He was taken into custody after officers noticed the bath panel at a property on Victoria Crescent, had been tampered with and discovered 34 wraps of crack cocaine and 45 of heroin hidden in a plastic bag behind it. Awosika was also found to be carrying two mobile phones and more than £300 in cash.

Former Adamawa Fnance Commissioner Jailed 10 Years For Corruption

A former commissioner for finance in Adamawa State, John Babani Elias, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for diverting state funds. The conviction followed a corruption case instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, against the one-time commissioner of local government and chieftaincy Affair.

2 Year Jail Term or N2 Million Fine proposed for “Abusive Statements on Social Media” inc. Twitter, Instagram & WhatsApp

There goes your freedom of speech people. In December 2013, the Nigerian Senate reached an advanced stage of approval for a bill which proposed the following. Section 13 subsection 3 of the bill stated that: “Anyone who intentionally propagates false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic message shall be guilty of an offence and upon conviction shall be sentenced to seven years imprisonment or N5 million (fine).” 

Lion Escapes from Cage at Wild Life Park in Jos

A lion escaped from the Jos Wild Life Park on Wednesday according to John Doy, Acting General Manager, Plateau Tourism Corporation.

He said the lion escaped “at about 8 a.m. while it was being fed”.

Doy said that the lion, which had been caged since 1972, “slipped through the gate of the cage when it was opened for its routine feeding. The animal is still within the vicinity of the Park but our fear is that the Park is not fenced. We are struggling to recapture it, but we want members of the public to be vigilant,” he said.

Delta Pastor’s 17 Year Old Son Rapes & Kills 14 Year Old Girl

The 17-year-old son of a Delta based-pastor has allegedly raped and killed a 14-year-old girl.

According to Vanguard, the accused also attempted to harm the victim’s 9-year-old sister. However, she managed to escape although he injured her.

The incident is said to have occurred at Oduduru Road, Sapele.

Sources say worshipers at the suspect’s father’s church were shocked at the conduct of his son, which they described as “unbecoming of a cleric’s son.”

Police Arrest 9 Fake Dettol Soap & Liquid Disinfectants Sellers In Kano

According to the Public Relations Officer of the state’s Police Command, Mr Magaji Majiya, the police in Kano have arrested nine persons for allegedly selling face substandard Dettol soap and liquid disinfectants. Items recovered from the suspects included 1,301 cartons of the product, four cartons of soap valued at N11.1 million. 

The suspects were apprehended at the Sabon Gari Market in Kano following a letter of complaint from a concerned citizen in the state. According to Magaji Majiya, 'After receiving the letter, the ambush squad raided the market where six retailers and three dealers were arrested.' 

As soon as the investigation is completed, the suspects would be duly charged to court for prosecution.

19 Month Old Baby Burned To Death In Oven By Her Siblings

A baby was baked to death in an oven by her toddler brother and sister after they were left alone at home. 

The twin three-year-olds watched as 19-month-old J’zyra Thompson kicked the oven door after they made it “hot”, court documents claim. 

Mum Racquel Thompson and her boyfriend had gone out to fetch a takeaway pizza and a prescription, leaving four kids under the age of five in the flat without telling a grandmother who lived in the same block.

LASG Warns Lagosians Against Consuming Imported Chickens

The Lagos State Government has warned Lagosians against eating exhumed and contaminated chicken that are in circulation within the state as they pose a serious health risk to everyone. 

The Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Toyin Suarau, said some imported poultry products that are contaminated were seized by the Nigeria Customs Service in Badagry and buried but were later exhumed by some people who planned to sell them to unsuspecting members of the public. 

NDLEA Intercepts Drugs Worth N4.6bn From Notorious Drug Dealer

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested 42-year-old Tochukwu Ubah, alleged to be coordinating a large volume of methamphetamine and ephedrine distribution in the country. 

In a statement issued by Mitchell Ofoyeju, Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, in Lagos on Sunday, Mr. Ubah was arrested by the agency’s Special Enforcement Team, SET, at the old local section of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos when he arrived from Enugu. 

Kogi Governorship “Projected Winner” Abubakar Audu is Dead

On the 21st December 2015, the Governorship election for Kogi State took place. As at the end of the election, the projected winner of the poll was All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Abubakar Audu.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the results of the elections inconclusive.
Shortly after this announcement, Abubakar Audu collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

His sudden death was unexpected. As of now, the exact medical cause of death has not been revealed.

Police Arrest 21 Homosexual Students In Asaba, Delta State

Police men in Asaba, Delta State, have arrested 21 students who are allegedly homosexuals.

According to Punch, a reliable source said that two state-owned polytechnics (names withheld) where the suspects were arrested, were popular with homosexual activities for financial gains.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

She said:

“We had it on good authority that the male students allegedly engaged in anal sex. The suspects, upon interrogation, made useful statements to the police while investigations are ongoing.”

Newlywed Lawyer Allegedly Cuts Wife’s Ear with Pliers

A newlywed lawyer Nonso Paul Nzedebe allegedly cut his wife Nwogo‘s ear with pliers.

The couple just got married a year ago – in December 2014, and they have a four-month-old baby boy, Emeka. The wedding photos are all on his Instagram page – click here. 

On the 16th of November, the wife recently ran to a police station as bits of her ear were dangling, after she said her husband came after her with pliers. He attacked her because she had reported his incessant abuse to police.

Nollywood Actress Maureen Ihua Reportedly Abducted

Veteran actress Maureen Ihua was reportedly abducted in Port-Harcourt two days ago and now a N10 million ransom demand has been made.

According to reports, 3 gunmen kidnapped Maureen Ihua on Ada George road in the capital city of Rivers State and she is said to have been taken to an unknown location in Port Harcourt.

Her abductors contacted her family members and demanded for a 10 million Naira ransom.

No confirmation yet from the police.
