Elenu proposes to girlfriend

Don’t we all just love romantic stories? Well popular stand-up comic Akinlami Babatunde Julius, popularly known as Elenu on Sunday, October 21, 2012 surprised his fiancée Chinwe Anyanwu when he proposed to her.

Elenu had taken his beau Chinwe to dinner at the Federal Palace Hotel, V.I with friends but when the waiter brought her plate, it read on it ‘Will you marry me?’ with a ring on it. And of course she said YES!!! So lovely!! Continue to see more pics...

PremiumTimes, an online news portal reports that the governor flogged the manager and ordered his security officials to assault two other PHCN staff. The management of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, KEDC, a subsidiary of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, accused the Governor of assaulting the workers. The Acting Managing Director of the Company, Mohammed Adamu, made this known at a press briefing late Monday at the company’s Doka office in Kaduna.

Mr. Adamu explained that the staff was summoned by the governor and was beaten to a pulp by the Governor and some of his aides. “On Saturday, 20th October, 2012, an unusual and unfortunate event took place which was beyond our comprehension. On the said date our business manager, Gwiwa Business Unit, Sokoto state, Moses Osigwe, was invited by the Executive Governor of the State, Aliyu Magatarkada Wamakko to his personal residence, over the issue of lack of power supply to his hometown, Wamakko, as a result of a failed 2.5MVA transformer.

Two students of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, Henry Edewo, 21 and Emmanuel Isikhuime, have been arrested by the Police for kidnapping, raping and murdering a female student, one Mercy Peter, 21, also a student of the institution. They were alleged to have buried their victim in a shallow grave in a forest at Ugbor village, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, after killing her. Vanguard gathered that the victim, who was kidnapped on July 29, this year, was killed four days later after she was serially raped by the suspects.

They were also alleged to have continued to demand for ransom from her parents after killing her. State Police Public Relations Officer, Anthony Airhuoyo, however, told newsmen that the police made a breakthrough in the case on October 17 when two of the suspects were arrested. He added that a third suspect, whose name was given as Charles, was still on the run.

Airhuoyo disclosed that the suspects took the police to the spot where they buried Mercy and her corpse was exhumed. He said they were awaiting autopsy report.

Gunmen burn two people alive in Potiskum

Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday night burnt the residence of the village head, Hakimin Gwaje and Alhaji Mohd Salisu Auwal with two people alive in Potiskum town of Yobe state.

Daily Trust gathered that the gunmen raided the house located at Low Cost area in the middle of the night. Some residents in area told our correspondent that the attackers tied the deceased up and threw them into the burning house.

Another resident who spoke in confidence said the attackers "Ransacked everywhere in the house, tie down the two people, suspected to be the biological sons of the village head inside the house and burnt them to ashes," he said.
"It not easy to conclude that they were his sons because they are burnt beyond recognition," he said.
He said that the village head is suspected to have left the town with other members of his family for safety reasons.

Girl used for ritual purposes after sexual intercourse with sugar daddy

Bobby Brown arrested for DUI ... Again

Bobby Brown was just arrested for DUI ... for the second time again this year according to TMZ. Law enforcement sources say Brown was pulled over around 1AM when police observed the singer driving erratically on an L.A. street. According to law enforcement sources, officers approached Brown's vehicle and detected a strong odour of alcohol -- at which point they asked Brown to get out of his car.

We're told Brown performed a field sobriety test, but didn't do very well -- so he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He's currently being booked. Brown was previously arrested for DUI in March and sought treatment for alcohol abuse issues over the summer. He also has a DUI conviction on his record from 1996.

Student flogged to death by Teacher

In Awka, the Anambra capital, a 12-year-old second school pupil, Chidimma Ukachukwu, has died after her teacher caned her, purportedly for not doing her homework.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the girl died on Thursday last week after she was caned. She had fainted following the beating and then rushed to a hospital, where she sadly passed.

There are reports that the Commissioner for Education, Uju Okeke, has closed the school down, but she told newsmen that the school was on mid-term break.

However, an official the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Akwa South Local Government Area has refuted that. Chairperson of the union in the local government, Buife Ndigwe, said schools only go on break next week.

The girl’s father, Simeon Ukachukwu, confirmed the incident, saying it was a sad development but “an act of God.” The police in the state say they are not aware of the incident. What rights does the teacher have to do this?

Boko Haram plans to strike on Sallah day - says JTF

Nigeria’s military on Tuesday said it had uncovered a plot by Boko Haram militants to carry out “massive attacks” during an upcoming Muslim festival with the help of foreign mercenaries. A spokesman said the insurgents were planning to strike in Borno state during Eid-El-Kabir, typically called Sallah in Nigeria, which this year falls on October 25 and 26. “Information available to the Joint Task Force indicates that the Boko Haram terrorists are planning to launch massive attacks on military and civilian targets in Borno state before, during and after the forthcoming Sallah celebrations,” Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said in a statement.

“The terrorists have invited foreign mercenaries to assist them in the anticipated attacks,” Sagir said, but declined to comment on the nationalities of the alleged foreign fighters. “We know where they are coming from but we don’t want to disclose that because we don’t want to pre-empt our security arrangement to tackle them”. Y'all should be careful out there.

Apple unveils the iPad mini

Apple has revealed a new smaller iPad mini with a 7.9inch screen that is set to blow away its rivals in the tablet market this Christmas. It will go on sale next week on November 2 and cost from £269 ($329) and the company hopes the ultra-competitive price will destroy its main rivals Amazon, Microsoft and Google.

The iPad mini was revealed by Apple's Phil Schiller at a special event in California, who said:'You can hold it in one hand, this isn't a shrunken down iPad, it's an entirely new design.'. 'iPad mini is as thin as a pencil and as light as a pad of paper, yet packs a fast A5 chip, FaceTime HD and 5 megapixel iSight cameras and ultrafast wireless―all while delivering up to 10 hours of battery life,' said Apple's Phil Schiller as he revealed the iPad mini. The firm also revealed a new version of its larger iPad which has a 9.7inch screen, and now has a faster chip.

Boko Haram received N1.5 Million from Senator Zanna

You all remember the Senator was invited by the SSS yesterday for interrogation. Well, here's another story - the senator had to explain to the men who interrogated him why he gave Boko Haram members N1.5M for Sallah rams. Monday night, Zanna arrived at the SSS headquarters in Abuja at about 1 pm where he was processed for interrogation.

He gave further insight into his relationship with the dreaded Islamist sect and reiterated his denial that Bama was arrested in his Maiduguri home. He told his interrogators that he gave N1.5 million for Sallah rams to the sect members following their threat to attack him. He explained that when they took his aide to his house for a search, they retrieved N250, 000 and left a message with the aide for him that he should provide them N10 million or they would come for him.

The senator, who was released at about 10 pm, is expected to report back at the SSS headquarters by 11am Tuesday.

Flavour drops out Of Top10 MICS

If the gist making rounds is anything to go by, Flavour, will no longer be part of this year’s Top10MICS music concert scheduled to hold at the exquisite Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos on Friday, November 30. Children born with facial deformities are always a sad tale. One such example is Kangkang, a boy born with a transverse facial cleft. The child looks like he is literally wearing a mask, due in part to a massive cleft that extends almost all the way up to his ears. Unable to see her son upon birth, the unfortunate mother pleaded and pleaded with her husband to see the newborn. After finally be handed the child, she broke down into tears.

There has been a bomb scare on an Arik Air flight from Maiduguri to Abuja but the Ministry of Aviation dismissed the incident as a hoax. The ministry described as absolutely false rumours of arrest of a man carrying bomb which he unsuccessfully tried to set off inside an Arik Airline flight from Maiduguri to Abuja at Nnamdi Azikwe Airport on Tuesday.

In a press release signed by Joe Obi, her media aide, Princess Stella Oduah, the Minister of Aviation described the speculation as a “hoax” without any “iota of truth whatsoever” and a ” wicked rumour”. Explaining what really happened, the ministry explained in the statement that a passenger identified as Aminu Galadima, an indigene of Minna, Niger state boarded a Maiduguri -Abuja bound Arik Air aircraft after going through all mandatory security screening. The Ministry said nothing incriminating, no explosives or weapons whatsoever were found on him after he was screened.

The State Security Service (SSS) on Sunday invited Senator Ahmed Khalifa Zanna from Borno State in connection with the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram Commander, Shuaib Mohammed Bama. The Joint Task Force, JTF, had on Thursday announced the arrest of Mr. Bama in Maiduguri, the Borno capital, describing him as “a high profile Boko Haram Commander who has been on the list of wanted terrorists operating between Bama and Maiduguri.”

The security agency later linked him to “a serving senator’s house along Damboa Road, GRA Maiduguri.”
A source within the SSS said yesterday the senator to which Mr. Bama was linked has now been invited for questioning. “Our investigation is proceeding well, and we have invited Senator Zanna to come and make certain clarification regarding his relationship with the suspect,” the source said. But shortly after we learnt of his invitation, Senator Zanna spoke in Abuja, saying there is a high level plot to frame him. He confirmed that he had been invited by the SSS.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has apprehended an official of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Mr. Akinyele Adetula, for trying to launder $1.4m (N218m). Sunday PUNCH learnt that the suspect was arrested at Murtala Mohammed Airport on Saturday.

According the Head of Operations, EFCC, Mr. Iliyasu Kwarbai, the suspect was able to pass through Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency security checks because he was wearing his identity card and therefore did not draw any suspicion.

He said, “The suspect is a FAAN security guard. He wore his tag and was thus able to move freely in the airport without drawing suspicion. He was carrying a bag and it went through the scanner. “The suspect passed through NDLEA and Customs and he went to the waiting area; but he started making phone calls instead of proceeding to board his flight. We accosted him and noticed that his bag was heavy.

The remains of Sheila, the widow of a renowned educationist, late Tai Solarin, who died on Sunday evening at Babcock University Teaching Hospital Ilishan Remo, Ogun State will be interred in two weeks time.

Mr. Tunde, second child of the deceased gave the hint yesterday while speaking with newsmen at their Ikenne-Remo residence.

He said: “Though the family is yet to meet to decide the date, I believe she will be buried within the next two weeks.”

Three Boko Haram victims buried in Anambra

Three persons murdered by people suspected to be members of the dreaded Boko Haram Islamic sect in Bauchi on October 14, 2012, were buried yesterday at Umunnachi in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State amidst tears by family members and sympathizers.

They include 65-year-old businessman, Chief Basil Okonkwo Azodo, his daughter, Ifeoma Azodo, 23 and his apprentice of many years, Sunday Ezechukwu, 21. The sect had earlier killed the first son of Chief Azodo, 31-year-old Christian Nnaemeka Okonkwo on April 18, 2011, also in Bauchi. PA Azodo and his daughter, as well as his apprentice, were allegedly killed on the same spot same day.

Make up on eye lashes may damage eyes - Optometrist

A consultant Optometrist, Dr Michael Nwoko, advised women not to apply eyelashes as makeup to avoid damaging the eyes. Nwoko, who is the Chairman, National Optometric Association, Edo chapter, gave the advice saying that the product contained chemicals that could damage the eyes. He said the eye reacted with any chemical that came close to it, adding: “When you apply chemicals, such as makeup on the eyes, the eyes must react and this could lead to itching of the eyes.

‘’Some of the patients that have recurrent conjunctivitis which is an eye infection that affects the outer eyeball, is sometimes due to chemical reaction with the eyes.’’ The optometrist also said that rubbing an itching eye could lead to the introduction of microorganisms to the eyes. He however advised that the makeup should be applied on the eyebrow and not on the eyelashes. “if it is on the eyebrow, which is far away from the eye, it’s okay but anything that gets to the eyelashes must react with the eyes. ‘’People that apply makeup on the eyelashes must reduce it or if possible they should stop it’’, Nwoko said. FAAN names Dana Airline as Best Domestic airline in Nigeria

Despite an air crash that claimed the lives of 153 people four months ago, the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) over the weekend named Dana Air as the best domestic carrier for 2011. According to FAAN’s Regional General Manager, Mr. Chris Bature, said the airline is yet to commence flights since the crash but was awarded the prize for its good customer relations and prompt payment of dues.

The Federal Government seized Dana Air’s license following the air disaster, but restored the license 93 days after the crash. Speaking at the occasion, Bature stated that the airline was selected because of its outstanding performance and punctuality while Lufthansa Airlines was also selected as the best international carrier for the same period.

Chukwumerije made the call on Friday at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State, while delivering a lecture to mark the 80th birthday of former Vice-President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.

Madam Sheila, co – founder of Mayflower School, Ikene, Ogun State and widow of the late social critic, Dr Tai Solarin, is dead. The foremost educationalist died Sunday evening at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ilishan Remo, Ogun State.

Sheila Solarin (nee Tuer) who was born in England May 31, 1924,was 82. She breathed her last about 4.30pm at BUTH on Sunday with her two children at her hospital bedside.

Her remains have reportedly been taken to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) morgue.

Nigeria’s finance minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been listed in Forbes 100 World Most Powerful Women. She is ranked No. 81.

Boko Haram kill Ex-Customs chief, son and family of ASP

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed seven people in Potiskum, Yobe state Saturday, taking the death toll to at least 30 for three days of violence in the northeastern town. Among the people killed were a retired customs chief, his medical doctor son and wiped out the family of an ex-police officer, police said.

“I have received reports of the killing of a retired controller of customs and a retired police officer and five members of their family by Boko Haram gunmen in Potiskum,” Yobe state police commissioner Patrick Egbuniwe told AFP. Egbuniwe said the gunmen killed the ex-customs officer Ajiya Waziri and his medical doctor son, before the attack on the police officer and four members of his family. Residents said Waziri and his son were abducted from their house and taken to the outskirts of the city where they were shot dead. Their bodies were dumped on the roadside.

Short film on rape - "Big Daddy" finally premieres online

The short film on rape, “Big Daddy” which premiered at the Silverbird cinemas on Sunday December 4, 2011 finally premiered online on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.

The premiere is coming on the heels of the film’s success at the recently concluded In-Short film festival in Lagos. “Big Daddy” which is directed by Chris Ihidero won the “Special Jury Award” and “Best Editing Award” at the 2012 In-Short International film festival which held on October 11 – 13th in Lagos. The movie also got four other nominations: best screen play, best sound, best cinematography, and best short film.

Big Daddy is a film against rape and sexual abuse, showing its social responsibility towards creating awareness and seeking solutions to the issue of rape in Nigeria.

Strip clubs in Lagos

Am sure y'all know what a strip club is so I won't go into details to explain. Anyway strip clubs are gradually making their way into many towns and cities in Nigeria and with increasing patronage by different sets of people.

Found this info on Online Nigeria's webpage that efforts by various governments, especially the Lagos State government to rid towns and cities of these strip clubs have met a brick wall as the operators of such businesses are back with little or no moderation to the usual practice. The government, while attempting to bring a little sanity to the city’s night life once raided the strip clubs in the Ikeja axis of Lagos State and arrested the strippers. But the operators reacted by charging the government to court.

This incident generated a lot of issues and divided the public who held different opinions on the business. Investigations carried out recently revealed that the operators of strip clubs are back in business and are carrying out activities there in a manner which obviously gives them an edge over ordinary night clubs in terms of patronage.

Tears and tributes flowed freely at King’s College, Lagos, on Wednesday as family and friends held a memorial service in honour of Ugochukwu Ozuah, a 36-year-old engineer who was allegedly killed by policemen five days after his wedding.

Ozuah, who graduated from King’s College in 1993, was once the Sports prefect of the school. Some of those present at the event were; members of the King’s College Old Boy’s Association, ex-colleagues of the deceased at University of Ado Ekiti and University of Lagos, where he was pursuing a Master’s degree in Operational Research; as well as the principal and current students of the college.

An ex member of the National Youth Service Corps, an undergraduate of the University of Port Harcourt and a young woman were attacked and shot dead by unknown gunmen in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers State. The former corps member, who had passed out on Thursday after completing the compulsory National Youth Service, was celebrating with his friends when the car conveying them suddenly skidded off the road and ran into a shop.

Well, this is good news. Set of triplets were delivered on Friday at the Fr. Joseph High School Relief Camp for flood victims in Anambra State. Mrs. Josephine Ejimofor, who was delivered of the babies, is a native of Enugu-Otu Aguleri, in the Anambra East Local Government Area of the state. The first set of triplets was born in the same camp about two weeks ago.

Governor Peter Obi celebrated with the Ejimofors on the safe delivery of the new triplets when he visited them in the camp. Reiterating his commitment to the welfare of the people displaced by the floods that ravaged parts of Anambra recently, Obi promised to help rebuild their homes when the flood recedes.

The governor thanked President Goodluck Jonathan and the Millenium Development Goals Office in Abuja for their intervention and commitment to ameliorating the suffering of the displaced persons.

Boko Haram member arrested in Senator’s house

This is shocking! A high-profile member of the Boko Haram sect has been arrested in the home of a senator in Maiduguri, Borno state, according to a statement from the military task force.

“A high-profile Boko Haram commander, one Shuaibu Mohammed Bama, who has been on the list of wanted terrorists … was arrested by task force troops in a serving senator’s house …,” the statement said of the arrest on Thursday. “He is in the custody of the (task force) and assisting in the investigation and has since made startling revelations.”

In November 2011, Nigerian secret police said they had arrested an alleged Boko Haram spokesman with ties to Senator Aliyu Ndome. The alleged links however appeared to involve local politics in Nigeria’s northeast.

33 drown in expressway accident in Ogun

No fewer than 33 persons drowned by noon on Friday when a coaster bus loaded with passengers ran- off a dual carriage bridge and plunged into a river at J4, Ogbere -Ijebu stretch of the Sagamu – Ore express way. The long medium range luxury bus still remained drowned and swept away from the point of entry to the river but there were three lucky survivors, including a pregnant woman who hung between a tree branch according to the Unit Commander, Ijebu – Ode Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Mr Seidu Isah Osilama.

Osilama said FRSC operatives arrived at the scene of the accident few minutes after the accident occurred and they were able to rescue the three survivors because they fell off the bus and landed on tree. He said rescue effort would require crane and divers to ascertain the location of the bus and the passengers inside the water.

According to him, the exact numbers of passengers in the bus or the casualty figure is not known as the victims are still in the river.

Nigerian embassy in Berlin attacked with paint bombs

The Nigerian Embassy in Berlin was attacked with paint bombs on Wednesday night by unknown persons, the police have said. According to police spokesman, unknown attackers threw glass bottles filled with a thick and sticky liquid at the front of the building in Neue Jakobstraße (The name of the street where the embassy is situated). The spokesman said the police have handed over the investigation of the incident to state security authorities, adding that political motive may not be ruled out in the attack.

The police said security workers noticed the damage to the building on Thursday morning. The spokesman said that on Monday, 120 activists, members of the “Refugee Protest March in Berlin campaign” gathered in front of the Nigerian Embassy to demonstrate against the practice of deporting asylum seekers from Germany. According to him, 14 of the activists illegally entered to the embassy, in order to “occupy’’ it as part of the protest march.

British Man charged for smuggling 80,000 Guns and 32 million rounds of Ammunition into Nigeria

A 42-year-old British arms dealer who is accused of smuggling 80,000 guns and 32 million rounds of ammunition worth £840,000 from China to Nigeria has dismissed the allegations as ‘ludicrous’. Gary Hyde, of Newton on Derwent, East Yorkshire, allegedly smuggled 40,000 AK47 assault rifles, 30,000 other rifles, 10,000 9mm pistols and the ammunition across the world in 2007.

The York-based businessman – a former director of UK companies York Guns and Jago Ltd – is said to have organised the trade and transportation of the weapons in contravention of UK arms laws. Hyde has pleaded not guilty to smuggling the 80,000 guns and 32 million rounds of ammunition.

A previous trial into the charges against Hyde was abandoned, the jury was told. Hyde denied two counts of becoming knowingly concerned in the movement of controlled goods between March 2006, and December 2007. He also denied one count of concealing criminal property between March 2006, and December 2008.

Police in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, have arrested three people, including a medical doctor (names withheld), for alleged child trafficking. Daily Sun gathered that the medical doctor. based in Abayi in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of the state, and two others, Nzekwe and Ogechi, were arrested following the disappearance of a baby boy delivered at the doctor’s hospital.

A police source revealed that one Peace Pius, an itinerant pregnant trader of 63 Rivers Road, Warri, Delta State, who was abducted while on transit to Aba, was made unconscious and kept in the custody of Nzekwe in conspiracy with Ogechi. The two suspects were later said to have taken their victim to the doctor’s hospital where a caesarean operation was performed on her and her baby removed.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, on Wednesday declared 26 October as Ed-el-Kabir Day following the sighting of the new crescent on Oct. 16. This was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council, Prof. Sambo Junaid.

The statement said, ” The sultanate council advisory committee at its meeting on October 16, reviewed reports received from various moon sighting committees across the country. “They have duly confirmed the birth of the new moon of Zulhijja, 1433 After Hijra of the Holy Prophet with effect from Wednesday, Oct. 17, which is the first day of Zulhijja.

“Friday, the 26 of October, is the 10th day of Zulhijja, 1433 AH, which is the Ed-el-Kabir day. “His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar wishes all Muslims a happy Ed-el-kabir. May Allah accept our religious deeds, Ameen.”
